Rum 101: What to mix with Rum?

In our cocktail journey of mixing every possible monstrosity with Rum, one thing we’ve learned is that – there’s a rum for every palate. The drink of course has nuances to it that are best enjoyed when it is taken neat, but it’s never really bound by rules. And because there’s always a rum for every palate, you might just have to experiment your way around with rum. So, whether it is cola, ginger ale, soda, tropical fruit juices, or water – there surely is a mix for you. Here are few of which you can try and experiment with the Wise Monkey Rums.

WATER

The second-best option after drinking it neat would be adding in a few drops of room temperature water to your rum. In fact, anything that’s above 45% ABV or is cask-strength can cope well with a little water.

A little H2O can also change the composition of the drink in a way such that it would release more flavours and aromas. This might not be the case with drinking rum on the rocks, as it can mellow it down pretty quickly and mask many flavours.

COCA-COLA

A classic you can never possibly go wrong with – Rum and Coke or the Cuba Libre cocktail. For most of us, our first rum experience was more likely to have been with the rum and coke combination. It’s got the sweetness, acidity, bubbles, and flavours that hit jus tright. Which would explain why the cocktail has stood the test of time for more than a hundred years.

CITRIC FLAVOURS

Right back from age-old times, citric flavours were added to a glass of rum by seafarers to keep many diseases at bay. Now we do it simply because it complements the drink with the extra flavour and the bright shades that we love seeing in our cocktail glass.

Citrus such as limes, lemons, oranges, and grapefruit add the acidic note to the drink which tames the burn of the alcohol. Which is why you can see that even a tinge of orange oil goes a long way in enhancing an old-fashioned cocktail.

GINFER BEER OR GINGER ALE

Essentially a Dark ‘n’ Stormy version. While both rum and ginger beer have strong flavour profiles, it creates a perfect balance when mixed with rum. Ginger beer brings along a spicy sweetness that cuts through the rum to offer a smoother and refreshing drink.

COCKTAIL EXPERIMENTATIONS

Finally on the list is a non-exhaustible list of ingredients that would go along with rum. Just about anything you can think of, go ahead and experiment with it.

Hot chocolate. Ice Cream. Tea. Herbs. Fresh juices. If you’ve got plenty of rum, you’re just a few steps away from crafting your very own signature serve. And if you need some help looking up recipes, our cocktail experiments are always a click away.
