For this week’s blog we decided to revisit a conversation we had with our master blender.
We had approached him with the stereotypical image of a master blender – you know, one of those who label spirits as their “calling” and something they were born passionate about. Quite surprisingly, we were met with a biochemistry geek who speaks of spirits as his ‘call of duty’.

Dr Virender Sheorain, when posed with the cliché of “Were you always into the spirits industry?”, laughs it off by saying he’s a Biochemist who enjoys a good drink. Since alcohol was one among the sciences involved within biochemistry, it was strictly a professional ‘spiritual calling’.
With the experience and understanding he comes along with; it was a no-brainer that he was called to oversee the blending of several big labels under National Rum of Jamaica and Pernod Ricard, among others.
It’s precisely this “No-Bullshit” approach of his, that he has incorporated within the Wise Monkey Rums as well. It’s an artistic expression of pure spirit science and honest rum.
Which is also why the Wise Monkey Rums boasted the ‘sold-out’ tag soon as their limited batch released in 2018.
(A feat the master blender was not surprised of either.)
Speaking about his favorite among the Wise Monkey blends, he says it’d always be the first child – the Wise Monkey 5 Year Aged Jamaican Rum. With over a decade of experience in crafting pot-still rums in Jamaica, he has a special fondness for the island and its distillation techniques.
Each of Wise Monkey rums bottles up a unique cultural essence of its lands of origin. With an all-natural approach.
As Dr Sheorain believes,
“Anything that’s natural will be more palatable and better than synthetic. A real thing can never be replaced”
Many rums that are ruling the markets today don’t even qualify as a ‘Rum’ in World Trade Organizations’ (WTO) terms, he explains. In contrast, Wise Monkey is a rum in its truest sense. With a pure molasses-base and all-organic expression; the brand offers one of the most smooth and palatable rums.
Guaranteeing this with his all, the hardcore biochemist says that it’s important that the consumers remain educated about the drinks they consume. Having been in the business since 1996, he’s dedicated his most to creating exceptional experiences – a commitment he fulfilled even with Wise Monkey Rums.
